Meet David Dougherty: Lumary’s New Senior Director of Revenue Cycle Management

With 35 years of experience in RCM, David Dougherty brings a rare combination of technical depth and genuine conviction to the work. We sat down with David to talk about his career, his early impressions of Lumary, and how he thinks about leadership, technology, and what it really means to be a trusted partner to clients.

A Career Built in Revenue Cycle

David’s 35-year career has been spent entirely in Revenue Cycle Management, working across technology companies, product development, and the creation of new business units from the ground up. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Revenue Cycle and Technology Enablement at Elite DNA Behavioral Health, with earlier experience at Therapy Brands and a decade at NextGen Healthcare.

That background gave him a specific set of strengths: building scalable units and developing systems that genuinely support clinicians, not just the back office. It is a perspective he has carried into his new role at Lumary.

A Personal Connection to ABA

David’s interest in Applied Behavior Analysis stems from both professional insight and personal experience. He saw ABA as a sector historically underserved from a scalable revenue cycle perspective, and his own family’s experience with disability services gave him a personal appreciation for the work.

“There was a gap here,” he explained, one where the industry needed the kind of structure and scale he had spent his career building elsewhere.

First Impressions of Lumary

Three weeks in, David has been genuinely impressed by what he found. “I’ve been super impressed with the product. I think it is very well put together. It’s very intuitive. It’s simplistic in a very positive way,” he said.

What stood out most was how advanced the platform already is. David noted that Lumary is further along than he expected coming in, with a level of sophistication in its design and functionality that exceeded his assumptions before joining the team. For someone who has evaluated RCM technology across multiple organizations over three and a half decades, that is a meaningful endorsement, and a strong signal for prospective clients weighing their options.

Looking Ahead: Building on Strong Momentum

David sees real opportunity ahead for Lumary’s RCM clients. He is focused on giving clients an even more complete revenue cycle experience, with an eye toward expanding service lines that help clients get more value from a single, trusted partner.

He has already begun sharing product enhancement ideas with the broader team, ensuring that both the RCM team and Lumary customers benefit as the platform continues to grow. With a strong foundation already in place, David is excited about what comes next, and confident that Lumary’s RCM offering is only going to get stronger from here.

Leadership Philosophy

David leads a team of approximately 16 full-time employees, a group he describes as already strong and well-equipped, and his approach to leadership is straightforward: stay open, stay collaborative, and avoid micromanaging.

“My job is to set people up for success,” he said, describing a style that leans on support rather than control. He holds regular skip-level meetings to stay connected to feedback across the team, a habit that keeps him closely attuned to what is actually happening on the ground, not just what filters up through management layers. Combined with his own 35 years of RCM experience, it is a leadership approach built on both deep expertise and genuine trust in the people doing the work.

AI and the Human-in-the-Loop Approach

On the subject of artificial intelligence, David is pragmatic. He sees real value in AI for handling repetitive tasks, but he is clear that it cannot replace the complex, human-led judgment that RCM work requires.

“You need a human in the loop,” he said, arguing that the nuanced decisions involved in driving financial outcomes still depend on experienced people, not automation alone. It is a balanced take, one that treats technology as a tool for efficiency rather than a substitute for expertise.

The Trusted Advisor Philosophy

Perhaps the clearest theme running through the conversation was David’s belief in acting as a trusted advisor rather than a vendor. “I use the term a lot with our customers as trusted advisor. I don’t want to be a vendor… I want to be their partner in getting them paid. I want to be their partner in bringing best-in-class technology into their organization,” he said.

That philosophy lines up closely with Lumary’s own partnership-focused mission, where customer feedback plays an active role in shaping product development. It is a natural fit, and one that suggests David’s approach will mesh well with the culture he has stepped into.

What Success Looks Like

For David, success comes down to a few clear metrics: reducing days in accounts receivable and improving net collection rates. But he is quick to point out that the value of RCM services extends beyond the numbers on a dashboard.

His view is that a strong RCM partnership effectively pays for itself. By recouping revenue lost to leakage, whether from billing errors or delayed follow-up, the service delivers financial impact that justifies the investment.

It is this alignment of incentives, paired with decades of hands-on experience, that David sees as the foundation of good revenue cycle partnership. And it is a foundation he is looking forward to building on at Lumary.
