Lu-Mo-Ry: Getting hairy for Movember
Movember is a month where the Lu-Mo-Ry team puts down their razors and limbers up, as we look beyond care management software and focus on a broader health issue – men’s health.
*WARNING: Many Mo puns incoming. Viewer discretion is advised!*
Wild, weird, challenging, mo-numental – there are lots of ways to describe 2021. It’s been a big year for humanity, and a tough year for many – so perhaps more important than ever is the month of November, or Movember as it has come to be known among those in the Mo.
It’s a period where some put down their razors for a month-long, facial hair free-for-all, and some get mo-ving (or both) to raise awareness for important men’s health issues. In particular, the mo-vement focuses on the three biggest health issues facing men: testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
Things can get a little hairy, but it’s a light-hearted approach to tackle some pretty heavy health concerns.
Mo Attention Needed
Globally, on average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day, and men die 5 years earlier than women. In Australia, 3 out of 4 suicides are men and 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before 85. These are some scary stats.
Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are dying before their time, and to make it worse, the reasons are largely preventable. If you’ve followed Lumary’s journey, you will know that the health and wellbeing of our communities is paramount to us – as is giving back.
Lu-Mo-Ry and the Movember Movement
In a challenging year, we regrouped as a Mo-team to tackle another year of groovy facial hair growing and bringing much enthusiasm for the Movember mo-vement. For Lumary, Movember is such an important time of year as we put a spotlight on better wellbeing. We bring awareness to our mental health and create safe places for employees to communicate and reach out for support if they need it.
Our Lu-Mo-Ry team dug deep with every whisker and ever mo-ve they could manage in our pursuit of the mo-st mo-gnificent Mo’s and even more KM’s to do our bit in raising much-needed funds and awareness for men’s health.
The Movember organisation has so far funded over 1,250 men’s health projects, across 23 countries, over 18 years of impact; resulting in funding the development of 54 inventions, 70 therapies and 107 diagnostic tests for prostate cancer.
We’re proud to do our bit in helping the Movember organisation work towards achieving its goal to help reduce premature death in men by 25% by the year 2030. Along the way, we had some great conversations about the importance of what the Movember fundraiser is all about – helping even more fathers, brothers, sons and mates live healthier and longer lives.
Making Mo-ves
We’re excited to have raised $1,645 in donations as a team, which Lumary is proud to match as part of our commitment to giving back to our community, taking our total to $3,290! This money will help fund groundbreaking research, innovative health projects, scientific breakthroughs for cancer treatments and life-changing mental health programs for boys and men across the world.
We grew, we moved, we laughed and most importantly we came together as a community with the purpose of creating better wellbeing globally – a community of over 6 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters around the world since 2003.
Every bit helps to make a real difference in the lives of real men, and any part we can play in changing lives for the better means the world to us Luminaries. If you’re reading this and wondering how you can support, head over to our Mo Space to check out, admire (and probably laugh at) our mo-growing attempts, and donate to this important cause.
